Catherina Hearne is a Cork (Ireland) based artist whose work includes sculpture, installation and painting. Her work explores states of transition, the themes addressed include the passage of time especially in relation to life’s journey. The central theme of her work draws on our individual and collective memories as people, families, communities and as a nation.

The visual references include folklore, personal and found mementos, memorabilia and religious artifacts while the process of making combines both ‘fine art’ and domestic or everyday approaches – drawing, painting, collage, sewing. This process of making; the attention to detail, the layering of information and building of surfaces, the physical engagement with materials, the time involved, are vital aspects of the work establishing links between her own artistic practice and the creativity of the culture and generations from whom she draws her inspiration.

The latest paintings utilise references from architecture to lace making and contemporary fashion. Their abstract forms encapsulate personal experiences and tap into our collective memory – the fragile detail of lace, the structure and decoration of buildings, hanging ribbons as votive offerings, the individuality of dress and the complex intimacy of relationships; these images all inform and are reflected in the work.
